Siemens Mobility and voestalpine for efficient and effective electromobility

Electromobility is much more than electric cars. More and more means of transportation rely on electric drives, from buses to trains to entire railway networks. Our customer, Siemens Mobility, is a central player in the industry and is driving the transition of mobility with highly innovative solutions. Siemens Mobility is a key player in the development of sustainable mobility solutions that reduce carbon emissions and minimize the environmental impact of transportation systems. A crucial area in this field is the electrification of railway networks, and Siemens Mobility focuses on electric locomotives and the conversion to fully electric train networks in order to significantly reduce carbon emissions when compared with conventional drives.

In order to ensure sustainability and carbon neutrality throughout the entire production process, Siemens Mobility attaches great importance to the careful selection and procurement of materials. They work closely with voestalpine to procure high-quality, energy-efficient electrical steel for the engines in their vehicles. isovac®, the electrical steel of voestalpine, is manufactured at the Linz site in a state-of-the-art production facility. The specially developed, ultrathin electrical steel strip meets the highest requirements with respect to magnetic properties and mechanical load capacity.

Sustainability begins in the details. Innovative products such as permanent magnet synchronous motors feature particularly high energy efficiency. A great deal of emphasis is placed on responsible material selection, for example, by using highly efficient and resource-saving electrical steel.

Innovative drive technology

The new generation of electric motors made by Siemens Mobility relies on a future-oriented technology: the permanent magnet synchronous motor. This innovative drive solution combines sustainability with performance and is specifically designed to minimize energy consumption and optimize operating costs. Thanks to their compact design and a patented cooling system, the motors achieve the highest levels of efficiency and reliability. The sustainably produced electrical steel of voestalpine in the environmentally friendly greentec steel Edition is an important factor in the low carbon footprint. The long service life of the engines also underlines the aspect of sustainability.

New Piccadilly Line on the London Underground

An example of the successful implementation of this forward-looking technology can be found in the new underground lines operated by Transport for London (TfL). Thanks to its innovative design and engineering, the system offers outstanding energy efficiency, even in the uniquely cramped environment of London's tight underground.

voestalpine relies on innovative processes and technologies that significantly reduce carbon emissions during the production of electrical steel. We work together with our customers to ensure that the vehicles themselves as well as the materials are produced in accordance with the highest environmental standards. This holistic approach to decarbonization along the entire lifecycle of the product is an essential contribution to achieving climate objectives in the transport sector.

Sustainability is a central pillar of both corporate strategies. We invest a great deal in research and development to advance innovative, low-emission technologies. At the same time we are working hard to make our own processes and supply chains more and more sustainable. Ultimately it’s about making mobility fit for the future.

Siemens Mobility

Siemens and voestalpine have a long-term development partnership in the field of the latest electrical steel technologies and green steel. The two companies share the same vision of sustainability and the transformation of mobility. As a supplier of our CO2-reduced electrical steel, isovac® in the greentec steel Edition, we are pleased to be working together on these great projects.
