SHAPING THE ENERGY TRANSITION TOGETHER
Sustainability happens where strong partners share responsibility. This is exactly what we are doing together with Trench Austria: The company recently began sourcing isovac® electrical steel in the greentec steel edition—marking another milestone in a partnership that combines quality, reliability and climate awareness.
PARTNERSHIP WITH AN IMPACT
Trench Austria and voestalpine have worked together as partners for many years. The Trench Group is a leading global provider of components and systems for high-voltage power transmission. With eleven production sites in eight countries and over 3,000 employees, the company is successful worldwide. Trench has been producing highly specialized high-voltage components at its Austrian site in Leonding since 1954, where it is a world leader in manufacturing reactors for power transmission and distribution networks. The site is currently undergoing a major expansion—with investments exceeding 47 million euros and a significant increase in production capacity to meet growing global demand.
Trench’s high-voltage components are essential for grid stability and security of supply—and thus for the success of the energy transition. Trench’s conscious decision to choose the greentec steel edition demonstrates that sustainable materials are being utilized where they are system-critical.

GREENTEC STEEL IN ACTION
With the switch to the greentec steel edition, the familiar premium quality of the isovac® electrical steel produced in Linz (Austria) remains unchanged, while the CO₂ footprint is significantly reduced.
A tangible example: A typical Petersen coil (arc suppression coil) from Trench contains about 3.5 tons of electrical steel. By using the greentec steel edition, approximately 770 kg of CO₂ are saved per unit. A measurable impact, component by component.
SHARED GOALS, A CLEAR COURSE
Both voestalpine and Trench pursue ambitious sustainability goals. While we are consistently driving the decarbonization of steel production with greentec steel, Trench is developing technologies that make the expansion of renewable energy possible—from stable power grids to long-lasting high-voltage solutions. The collaboration brings both together: Material expertise and system relevance.
The shared moment—captured during the handover between Ronald Schmid and Alexander Ikonomou (Trench Austria) as well as Stefan Peter Kaspar, Roland Schmid and Alexander Wiesinger-Mayr (voestalpine)—represents this path: collaborative, long-term and future-oriented.

When sustainable steel is used where it secures the future of energy, a real impact is made. That is exactly what we stand for together with Trench.
