ResponsibleSteel: AUDIT CONFIRMS SUSTAINABLE HEADING

ResponsibleSteel is the world’s first independent standard and collaborative initiative for responsible steel production across the entire value chain. From 1 to 4 December 2025, we hosted our fourth ResponsibleSteel audit, and once again our commitment to sustainability showed its true strength. The voestalpine Steel Division didn’t just meet the established standards; we proved that sustainable steel production is part of our DNA.

INDEPENDENT, TRANSPARENT AND GROUNDED IN REALITY

Independent auditors explored our entire Linz site—joined by a "witness auditor" to ensure the total quality and independence of the process. Through extensive site tours and interviews, they took a deep dive into our workflows and procedures. The feedback was excellent: they highlighted our thorough preparation, our open and constructive dialogue and the transparency with which we tackle current challenges.
 
ResponsibleSteel evaluates everything from environmental and social impact to governance in the areas of climate protection, resource management, human rights and ethical leadership. A brief summary is provided in the "Responsible Steel Guide for Buyers." 

OUR FOCUS

The audit put a spotlight on the core of our transformation journey:

  • Further development of our culture—the voestalpine program for a respectful, safe and healthy workplace
  • Our approach to occupational safety and environmental management
  • Measurable progress of our greentec steel initiatives to decarbonize production

The auditors specifically praised our clear accountability, transparent KPIs and the way we actively involve our stakeholders.

CONSISTENCE IS KEY WHILE OUR WORK CONTINUES

Just like our previous audits, the results are clear: the Steel Division continues to hit the high bars set by ResponsibleSteel. Many minor improvements have already been made, while others are currently being rolled out. This is where the real daily work of sustainability happens.

Our next audit is already set for 2027, and we’re heading toward it with clear goals. This gives our customers and partners the peace of mind that our progress toward green steel remains transparent and independently verified.

ResponsibleSteel isn’t just a box to check; it’s a compass that constantly shows us where we stand and where we need to head next.
