NEXT MILESTONE FOR GREEN STEEL

An important milestone has been reached for greentec steel, Austria's largest climate protection programme: the core equipment for the new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at the voestalpine site in Linz has arrived. The new furnace will go into operation in the first half of 2027 and, at full capacity, will produce around 1.6 million tonnes of steel a year with a significantly lower CO₂ footprint.

KEY MILESTONES

With greentec steel, voestalpine is pursuing a clear roadmap for electrifying its steel production. At both of its sites, in Linz and Donawitz, a new steel plant with an electric arc furnace is being built, all while production continues at high capacity. Here are the key milestones on the way to the new electric arc furnaces:

  • 2026: completion of construction work, delivery and installation of the core units, commissioning of the supply infrastructure
  • H1 2027: first melts in the new electric arc furnaces and official commissioning
  • afterwards: gradual ramp-up of the plants with tests and trial operation until stable ongoing operation is reached
  • by 2029: up to 30% fewer CO₂ emissions compared to 2019 – equivalent to almost 5% of Austria's total annual CO₂ emissions.
