GOLD IS THE NEW GREEN

Some awards come as a surprise. Others arrive with such regularity they’ve become a welcome habit—though they are no less earned. voestalpine Stahl GmbH has once again achieved the EcoVadis Gold rating, proving once more that for us, sustainability isn’t just a project. It’s part of our DNA.

WHAT EXACTLY IS EcoVadis?

Founded in Paris in 2007, EcoVadis is now the world’s largest provider of business sustainability ratings. More than 150,000 companies across 185 countries and 250+ industries participate in these assessments—from major automakers and mechanical engineers to steel producers and their suppliers across the entire value chain. What makes it unique is that EcoVadis doesn’t just look at a few "green" figures; it conducts a deep dive into companies across four key pillars:

  • Environment: Carbon footprint, resource management, biodiversity
  • Labor & Human Rights: Fair working conditions, safety, diversity
  • Ethics: Compliance, anti-corruption, transparent business practices
  • Sustainable Procurement: Responsible supply chain, raw material sourcing

In total, 21 indicators are evaluated. The result is a score from 0 to 100, which earns a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum medal depending on the ranking.

GOLD: THE TOP 5% WORLDWIDE

In the latest EcoVadis rating, voestalpine Stahl GmbH again secured Gold—placing us in the top 5% of all rated companies globally. To put it another way: we outperformed 95% of the 150,000+ companies assessed. That is no small feat.

This rating reflects how we operate every day: our consistent path toward climate-friendly steel production, fair and safe working conditions for our employees and a supply chain that takes responsibility seriously.

MORE THAN JUST A TROPHY

Another award is great, but EcoVadis is more than just a trophy on a shelf. For many of our customers and partners, this rating is a central factor in their decision-making. Today, anyone purchasing steel wants to know: How sustainably was this steel actually produced? Who is behind it? And can I prove it? The EcoVadis Gold rating provides that exact answer—independent, transparent and internationally recognized.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

Gold is excellent, but we aren’t stopping there. Through greentec steel, we are working intensively to reduce carbon emissions in steel production step-by-step, with the goal of reaching Net-Zero by 2050 at the latest. The next major milestone is the first electric arc furnace at the Linz site, which will go into operation in 2027.

The EcoVadis rating serves as an important compass—not just for us, but for everyone who wants to see how serious we are about our commitment.
