Facts about grain-oriented and non-grain-oriented electrical steel

Significant differences appear in the magnetic properties of grain-oriented electrical steels between structures in the direction of rolling (very good characteristics) and structures crosswise to the direction of stock flow (poor characteristics). Processing steps must be selected to achieve favorable properties (direction of rolling).

Differences in the magnetic properties of non-grain-oriented electrical steels can occur, but they are substantially less pronounced. The material is characterized by low directionality (anisotropy) with respect to the magnetic and mechanical properties. The main applications for non-grain oriented electrical steel are motors of all sizes, generators, ballasts and much more.

For further classification of non-grain oriented electrical steel, a distinction is made between fully processed and semi-processed electrical steel. The difference between these two types of electrical steel lies in the final manufacturing step.
