This product group includes a wide variety of alloys, e.g. soft magnetic Iron-Cobalt alloys for applications in solenoid control valves, but also Iron-Nickel (Cobalt) alloys with temperature-dependent, low thermal expansion for use in measurement and control technology, for glass to metal seals and thermobimetals and also alloys with shape memory effect.

This product group includes a wide variety of alloys, e.g. soft magnetic iron-cobalt alloys for applications in solenoid control valves, but also iron-nickel (cobalt) alloys with temperature-dependent, low thermal expansion for use in measurement and control technology, for metal-glass connections and thermobimetals as well as alloys with shape memory.

Soft magnetic steels react to even weak magnetic fields with high polarisation. This is characterised by a narrow hysteresis curve with low coercive field strength Hc and high saturation polarisation Js. Typical materials with such properties are pure iron, FeNi and FeCo alloys for use in switching relays and as magnetic cores in measuring and control devices.
Alloys based on Fe-Ni can be used to set very different coefficients of thermal expansion. By varying the Ni content and adding Co and Cr, an approximation to the coefficient of thermal expansion of other materials can be achieved. Low thermal expansion is required for master measures, measuring tapes, balance beams and measuring instruments. Some alloys exhibit a thermal expansion comparable to that of glass and are used as electrical current feedthroughs, e.g. in light bulbs
Alloys with low thermal expansion can be positively bonded to materials with greater thermal expansion, resulting in thermobimetals for thermometers and temperature controllers.
Certain alloy systems, e.g. Fe-Ni-Co alloys with martensitic transformation, exhibit a certain temperature-dependent shape memory and can be used as actuators in control systems, for example.
Fe-Ni alloys with other alloying elements, e.g. Cr or Mo, exhibit a largely temperature-independent modulus of elasticity and are used as balance springs in watches, springs in spring balances and elements in load cells.

  • BÖHLER P800

BÖHLER P800 is a soft magnetic Fe-17% Co- alloy with high magnetic saturation. It has been developed for use in high performance actuator systems especially in the area of Diesel Injection Systems. Thanks to the high magnetic saturation of min 2,14 T (at min. 400 A/cm), the cobalt-iron alloy generally is suitable for all applications where high flux density and minimum weight is required. Due to the moderate Co content BÖHLER P800 is optimized for challenging technical applications under economically sensitive conditions. Delivery condition as rolled. The alloy can be cold formed. A final annealing treatment for magnetic properties is to be carried out after cold reforming, such as extrusion, upsetting or extensive machining operations.

  • BÖHLER P810

BÖHLER P810 is a Fe-Ni-Co alloy with a low and stable coefficient of thermal expansion in the temperature range from -100 to +450°C.Some technical ceramics (e.g. aluminium oxide, aluminium nitride, borosilicate glasses and semiconductor materials) show coefficients of thermal expansion of the same order of magnitude. The alloy is therefore used for metal-glass seals of electronic components, material transitions in vacuum chambers, X-ray tubes, transistor sockets and similar. In the field of microelectronics and microsystems technology, BÖHLER P810 is used as a housing material or as a submount, i.e. an intermediate layer between the actual carrier material and material with a usually significantly higher coefficient of expansion, and serves as a compensating element that absorbs or reduces the thermomechanical stresses caused by the different coefficients of thermal expansion of other materials.
