Back to school: Digital Learning Center

voestalpine supports three care projects with donations from voestalpine cares run. One is an UNICEF schools' project in Ukraine. The projects ensures access to education and providing school materials and tools, as well as a safe place for learning. In Digital Learning Centres children who do not have access to devices and online learning are given access and supported in catching up on learning.

Who benefits from the aid money donated by voestalpine in the course of the voestalpine cares run?

After more than a year of war in Ukraine, there is still no end in sight. It is above all the children who are suffering from the consequences of the war. Five million Ukrainian children, that is more than two thirds, are refugees within Ukraine or fleeing abroad. They have not only been deprived of their homes, but also of the opportunity to attend school. An important piece of normality in this terrible time is thus additionally lost.  More than 2,000 (pre-)school buildings have already been damaged by the war, more than 200 completely destroyed.

What concrete relief measures are being financed with voestalpine's donations?

School and working together with peers and teachers is extremely important for Ukrainian children to cope with stress. Being at school also distracts from the devastating reality. It is also important that the young generation does not experience additional disadvantages in the future due to the lack of education. This includes ensuring access to education and development and providing school materials and tools for children of all ages. For example, through Digital Learning Centres set up in selected locations. This can ensure that children who do not have access to devices and online learning are given access and supported to catch up on learning.

Why is corporate financial support important for your organisation?

Rebuilding the destroyed schools will take years. The need for action is great, because children need education and the social environment of school. UNICEF does not receive compulsory contributions from governments. We finance our aid exclusively through voluntary contributions. With voestalpine's donation, the DLCs in Ukraine can be further expanded and operated, and teaching can continue to take place in a safe place. In this way, the children and young people also get the opportunity to see their friends again and regain a piece of normality.

What can 100 donated euros achieve for the people you support?

Out of 100 donated euros, 81.4 euros go directly into the programmes. 6.21 euros are used to issue donation receipts, for example, and 12.33 euros are used to collect further donations. With 15 Euros per month, we provide children with 20,000 litres of clean drinking water.

What criteria are used to evaluate the impact of donations?

UNICEF works with partner organisations and local initiatives worldwide to ensure that local children receive the help they need most. UNICEF works conscientiously and reports in detail and transparently. UNICEF Austria has been awarded the Austrian Seal of Approval for Donations and is externally audited by TPA Wirtschaftsprüfung GmbH.
