Wessington Cryogenics relies on the welding technology expertise of Böhler Welding

20 July 2023 |

Premium products from voestalpine Böhler Welding are characterized by their excellent applicability: for this reason, Wessington Cryogenics chooses voestalpine Böhler Welding UK as their partner.

Wessington Cryogenics is a renowned manufacturer of cryogenic pressure vessels for liquid nitrogen, argon and helium for customers all over the world and is based in Houghton le Spring, UK.

The Challenges

The challenges for Wessington Cryogenics were many: a need to increase production output, to rising utility costs. Challenges were also faced in terms of reliability: older equipment no longer met current requirements and spare parts were not always available.

Weld quality: Using FCAW wire in the downhand position meant that slag inclusions were a problem.

Wessington Cryogenics was keen to solve the slag inclusion issues and speed up the overall welding process. Welds on circumferential joints were to be inspected 100% with DPI and 10-50% with X-rays. It was decided to invest in new processes and equipment.

Böhler Welding delivers the solution:

URANOS NX 4000 GSM in combination with FOXcore 308L-MC metal cored wire

What convinced the customer: welding with a top-mounted oscillating head while the vessel was rotated on a
manipulator and welding using the pulse-transfer method to minimise spatter and heat input.

The ease of use and user-friendly ergonomics were noted positively by the customer according to feedback from his welders. The addition of the DC HF TIG meant that the machine could also be used for TIG welded components.

Due to the positive feedback, the first orders for URANOS NX 4000 GSM, TERRA 400 MSE and URANOS NX 2700 ACDC have already been placed.

The customer has also had excellent experiences with FOXcore 308 L-MC wire.
