New “MEWS” System Brings Zero Waste to Construction Processes

A new pre-panellised external walling system from Metsec dramatically reduces time and on-site construction costs.

Metsec’s External Walling System (MEWS) combines the company’s extensive experience of pre-panelised construction with the SFS continuous walling system. Each panel is designed so it can be fixed to the primary frame using minimal fixing points ensuring there is zero waste on site.

The design of the system provides automatic edge protection by cantilevering past the end of the floor slab, removing the need for extensive scaffolding during the construction process. Furthermore, because the panels are constructed off site and simply lifted into position, construction time can be cut by up to 50 per cent.

The panels are constructed with cement particle board to the external face with the option of an additional insulation board, the panels fix to the primary structure with a specially designed cleat allowing the installation to deal with any site tolerances from the primary frame. A compressible strip also provides an early weather tight seal between the panels allowing internal trades to start earlier in the construction programme.

This latest evolution from Metsec, further solidifies their prime position in the market when it comes to light gauge structural framing systems. Stephen Ginger, Sales Director of Metsec’s Framing Division said: “The development of MEWS brings a new dimension to pre-panelised construction and offers multiple benefits to architects and contractors in terms of safety & speed of construction, with a value engineered design & cost efficient solution.”

Metsec also recognises the increasing importance of collaborative working and MEWS has been designed for use in BIM projects. For further information on MEWS can be found at www.metsec.com/products/steel-framing/.
