Progress despite of Winter Wonderland

30 March 2026 |

Rising sales volumes require more powerful warehouse logistics. To make future delivery processes faster and more cost‑efficient, the Lower Austrian dairy company NÖM relied on the expertise of clad rack specialist voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik.

The equation seems simple: rising sales volumes require more powerful warehouse logistics. To make future delivery processes faster and more costefficient, the Lower Austrian dairy company NÖM relied on the expertise of clad rack specialist voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik. From October 2025 to March 2026, a high bay warehouse more than 30 meters high was constructed in Baden using silo construction, designed to sustainably strengthen supply reliability for the traditional company.

Not quite so simple, however, was the fact that the high bay warehouse was built during a winter that has become something of a rarity in Central Europe. Icy cold, frost and snow certainly made conditions more difficult — but they did not slow down construction progress or jeopardize the project schedule.

High‑performance delivery and warehouse logistics are among the key success factors in the food industry — and this also applies to NÖM AG, a leading domestic dairy company headquartered in Baden, Lower Austria. Located in the so called “Thermenregion”, a wine‑growing area around 26 kilometers south of Vienna, the Krems‑based high bay warehouse specialist constructed a fully automated, approximately 30‑meter‑high silo‑type high bay warehouse between October 2025 and March 2026. Where the Emperor and his family once resided, several hundred million kilograms of milk from more than 2,200 local farmers are now processed and distributed throughout Austria and abroad.

Regional roots & growth

Without the right logistical framework, it is hardly possible to reliably serve a growing market. KommR Ing. Josef Simon, Member of the Management Board of NÖM AG, confirms this:

We operate successfully on the international market. Over the past five years, we have almost doubled our sales — and for that, we of course need a large high bay warehouse.

With voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik, the company found a partner that ranks among the leading high bay warehouse specialists thanks to numerous successfully implemented projects.

Although the clad rack business is a highly international one, says Roland Stichauner, Managing Director of voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik, it is still something special to build a new warehouse in the region close to the company’s own site.

We are very pleased to be able to support a large Lower Austrian company like NÖM from the initial development phase through to realization.

confirmed also Gerald Klein, Managing Director of voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik. The close regional ties and the spirit of partnership formed a solid foundation for a project focused equally on growth, modernization and reliability.

Optimal use of space

Fully automated high bay warehouses form the backbone of modern capacity expansions and optimized delivery logistics. For NÖM AG, this investment was a key strategic step, as Board Member Josef Simon emphasizes: “In order to deliver faster, more flexibly and more cost‑efficiently in the future, we need an additional 26,000 pallet storage locations for our products.” The decision was therefore made in favor of a double‑deep storage system, continuously cooled to 4 degrees Celsius. The staggered vertical storage arrangement also enables maximum utilization of space within the silo structure measuring 86.16 meters in length, 60.3 meters in width and 30.2 meters in height.

A special technical feature is the cooling unit platform integrated at a height of 25 meters, complemented by a platform for the electric overhead conveyor system. This system allows goods to be transported faster, more gently and over longer distances than with stationary conveyor technology.

Winterly challenges

If it had been possible to choose the perfect time to build a high bay warehouse, winter 2025/26 would most likely not have been the first choice. Rarely has the Baden region south of Vienna experienced such picture‑perfect winter conditions as at the beginning of this year. Almost continuous sub‑zero temperatures, strong winds and snow volumes not seen in 20 years resulted at times in ice‑covered rack structures. “These conditions inevitably posed challenges for on‑site assembly,” explains Matthias Luger, Installation Manager for Warehouse Technology at voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik. Challenges that the team was nevertheless able to overcome together. Thanks to close coordination with the construction partners, staggered work steps — such as the construction of the pre‑zone and platforms — were also implemented reliably. In the end, the coordinated cooperation of all parties proved to be the decisive success factor, enabling progress to remain on schedule and even exceed planning expectations despite the most adverse conditions.

Constructive cooperation

Michael Misek, Project Manager at voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik, particularly emphasized the collaborative, constructive and goal‑oriented working approach of all project partners. The successful realization of the high bay warehouse was characterized by close, partnership‑based coordination. Despite challenging framework conditions, the high bay warehouse experts from Krems succeeded in ensuring fast, smooth and, above all, safe implementation. Key factors included early coordination, short decision‑making paths and a shared understanding of quality, safety and adherence to deadlines.

This approach was also highly appreciated by NÖM AG.

What makes this project so exceptional is the highly professional cooperation of all partners on the construction site

emphasized Mag. Christoph Posawetz, Logistics Project Manager at Frischlogistik & Handel GmbH. With the new warehouse, not only additional capacities were created, but targeted investments were also made in the future viability of logistics:

The modern high bay warehouse forms the foundation for further growth, increased supply security and more efficient processes along the entire value chain.
