Apprenticeship with internship abroad

29 August 2023 |

Immerse yourself in a foreign country, gain your first work experience, get to know new working methods and techniques at another international voestalpine site, discover career opportunities and make friends with colleagues - the voestalpine Metal Engineering Division's internship abroad offers all of this. Travel is still the most intensive form of learning!

As part of your apprenticeship at voestalpine, you have the opportunity to complete an internship abroad at a voestalpine subsidiary. Apprentices spend 1-2 months in the USA, Germany or UK and can apply for this great experience from the age of 18. A total of 8 apprentices have completed an internship abroad.

So did our colleague Sabrina (apprenticeship graduation spring 2023). She spent her internship abroad at a voestalpine subsidiary in the USA. We asked her for a short interim report.

Participating in an internship abroad is a unique opportunity to face new challenges, get to know a new culture, gain experience in the steel industry outside our company and improve your English skills (with dialect).

Intern Sabrina

"I'm sending you a few photos of work and my free time. All employees are super nice and friendly and happy to answer all my questions," writes Sabrina directly from the USA. "Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we have popcorn here for all employees (Wouldn't that also be a suggestion for my department in Austria: Popcorn Friday)?"

Sabrina is also impressed by the American lifestyle, although the hot summer temperatures almost push her to her limits: "Everyone drives huge cars, the food is very expensive and when you're outside you feel like you're on the grill. It is extremely hot and humid, at night and in the morning it is between 23 and 30 degrees + 60-90% humidity, during the day the temperature is between 30 and 35 degrees + 40-60% humidity. In each building, the air conditioning is set to very low temperatures."

Thank you so much for sharing your internship insights, dear Sabrina! We hope you had a great time!

It's the people who make the difference at voestalpine. People who manufacture, process and further develop high-quality steel products in specialized and flexible companies worldwide. People who make our customers' challenges their own. People with the drive to always find an even better solution. It's people like you who keep voestalpine one step ahead.
