Steel Production

The compact steel mill of voestalpine Donawitz GmbH & Co KG is specialized on ultra-clean steel blooms, which are used for the production of rail, wire rods, steel cord and seamless oilfield tubes.

The existing plant was designed according to the zero-waste concept with special emphasis on environmental regulations. It is operational since September 2000.

The pig iron is supplied from two blast furnaces and converted into crude steel by means of the LD-basic oxygen process. Vacuum degassing is applied in order to produce rail steels that are essentially free from non-metallic inclusions. The rail steel is continuously cast into blooms which are delivered to the adjacent voestalpine Schienen GmbH.
