Head-Hardened Rails

Harder, better and more innovative We are the only company in the world that produces rails in lengths of up to 120 meters in fine-pearlite head-hardened HSH® quality. According to this method, the red-hot rails that exit the rolling train are dipped head-first in a special bath to make them harder.

The result is a product that is extremely resistant toward abrasive wear. Because the HSH® method functions in sync with the rhythm of production flow, there is a high degree of flexibility. For this reason we can deliver various sections in head-hardened HSH® quality from structural rails to grooved rails. In accordance with the various rail-use philosophies, we offer HSH® grooved rails on a medium carbon basis or in ultra-hard quality.

Extensive rail testing in the research and technology centre of the German Federal Railway has shown that HSH® rails are far superior to the conventional rail grades 800 and 900 A, not only with respect to wear resistance and the formation of ripples. Particularly resistance toward roll contact fatigue, better known as head checks, is significantly improved with the use of HSH® rails. This adds yet an essential element to the customer spectrum.
