How to define innovation?

The term innovation (literally "innovation" or "renewal"; derived from Latin innovare 'to renew') is used in colloquial language in the sense of new ideas and inventions and for their commercial implementation. In the narrower sense, innovations result from ideas only when they are transformed into new products, services or processes that are actually successfully applied and penetrate the market (diffusion).¹

Performance in Innovation in the Wire Technology business unit – now also with digital support

"Since summer 2021, we have implemented our digital tool to support innovation management," says Tina Konrad, from the Research, Development and Innovation department at voestalpine Wire Rod Austria GmbH. This tool is currently available for voestalpine Wire Rod Austria GmbH, voestalpine Wire Austria GmbH and voestalpine Special Wire GmbH, and will subsequently be rolled out across the entire Wire Technology business unit.

Following the completion of internal training for all employees involved, the digital tool is now being used successfully in the Wire Technology business unit – with a number of clear advantages: On the one hand, the new digital tool makes it easier for employees to register their innovation ideas, and on the other, it enables efficient, transparent and targeted processing of the submitted ideas.

Peter Gruber, head of the Research, Development and Innovation department, is convinced that "great process and product innovations are created in the minds of our employees.” A well-established innovation process provides the necessary organizational framework for this – from idea generation, through feasibility studies, to realization and evaluation of success.
