WAAM – Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing

The Future of productivity – Live at voestalpine Böhler Welding Open House Hamm

At the end of June 2019 voestalpine Böhler Welding organized the traditional Open House at the production site in Hamm (Germany), where the 3Dprint solid wires are produced.

Additive manufacturing – popularly known as 3D printing – is one of the most revolutionary new manufacturing methods of our time. Due to the aspiring topic, lectures on “WAAM: the future of productivity” have been given during the event each day in both English and German language, raising a lot of interest from the audience, with many interactions and questions.

3Dprinting not only allows almost lossless processing of high-value material but also results in high-strength components with a flexibility that would not be conceivable using conventional methods.

To illustrate these advantages, a WAAM demo was running every day at the new Application Technology Center where a programmed robotic system was printing the Spark, i.e. the voestalpine Böhler Welding symbol, with a very stable, efficient and continuous process. For this demo a specific duplex wire conceived for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, called 3Dprint AM 2205 has been used. Open House participants had the possibility to examine the printed part, see the printing operations throughout a camera and discuss the WAAM related topic with the voestalpine Böhler Welding application engineers and WAAM specialists.

About 3Dprint AM 2205

  • A WAAM solid wire of 22 5 3 N L / ER2205 type designed for 3Dprinting of thinner structures with restricted cooling conditions.
  • Provides a ferritic-austenitic weld metal. The resulting microstructure is austenite with 45 – 55 % ferrite. The printed structures have very good resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking in chloride containing environments after post print solution annealing.

More details

In this regard, the new Application Technology Center will be fitted with a multifunctional Plasma and MIG / MAG WAAM equipment built by voestalpine Böhler Welding Automation, enabling feasibility studies and production of prototype parts on customer request.
