What is more important than productivity and profits?
On 1st November this year, voestalpine Böhler Welding (China) Co., Ltd. (BTWCN) achieved a safety record of two years without an accident.
Safety is always the top priority at BTWCN. We believe that our employees are the key to the success of our company and it is our responsibility to look after them. Only in a safe workplace, can we expect and encourage our employees to deliver excellent performance.
When he joined BTWCN at the beginning of 2016, our MD, Neil Smith, started a program of safety management that has a strong emphasis on employee participation and practical hazard identification and elimination.
First, good safety awareness needs to be promoted by top management. In regular management safety meetings, our MD and the BTWCN management team set and review our safety objectives and continuously review our safety performance. They evaluate all significant safety findings and decide the actions to fix them. They track our safety risk closure rate with an expectation that all are adequately closed within two-months. Management pays particular attention to changing legal requirements and interactions with local safety authorities, our performance against the voestalpine minimum safety requirements and KPIs and all the safety training needs of our employees. Through all of these measures, we continually identify opportunities to improve our safety management system.
The next level of safety management rests with the BTWCN Safety Committee - a body of dedicated employees from the various company departments, facilitated by our EHS leader - John Chang. They meet every two weeks to review and evaluate all open safety risks that are captured in our safety risk register. Everyone knows the expectation to close risks quickly and each team member works with other members of their and other departments to eliminate the identified hazards.
What is more important than productivity and profits? Without the protection of our employees through excellent safety awareness and management, neither can be achieved. A safe workplace is our minimum standard, and we know our employees are glad to contribute to our excellent safety record and are very happy to work for a company with such an engaging safety culture.
