2,200 tons for Corpus Christi

19 August 2014

Construction is progressing as per schedule

The first 2,200 tons of steel for the reformer building and furnace tower of the HBI plant have arrived in Corpus Christi.

The first deliveries by ship reached Texas on Monday, 18 August. A ship by the name of "BBC Zarate" arrived from Abu Dhabi, carrying the building material.

Starting from 2016, the plant in Corpus Christi will produce two million tons of hot briquetted iron (HBI) per year. This pre-material will be used for the production of high-quality steel. The plant has direct deep-ocean access to the Gulf of Mexico and will employ some 150 people.

About half of the environmentally compatible pre-material will be used at the Austrian production locations of voestalpine, further improving the cost position and supporting the quality strategy.
