Shipbuilding steel plates

Shipbuilding steel plates

Our shipbuilding steels in normal and high-strength grades are used in offshore applications, platform superstructures and for special ships in the oil and gas industry.

Areas of application

Steel shipbuilding plates are used in the cabin structures of cruise ships. The especially thin but wide plates are used for such applications to offer the best processing properties such as flatness and weldability. In contrast, high-strength, thermomechanically rolled shipbuilding plates are used in offshore applications. They are used for platform superstructures or for special ships in the oil and gas industry.

Stahlbrücke

Thermomechanically rolled fine-grained structural steel plates

alform®-steels are thermomechanically rolled steels with excellent weldability, toughness and cold-forming behavior.

We supply thermomechanically rolled heavy plates made of fine-grained steels with minimum yield strengths ranging from 355 to 550 MPa with exceptional toughness and the best welding and forming properties.

As a special high-quality voestalpine grade, alform® steels are found in structural steel work, bridges, pressure pipes and in vehicle and crane manufacturing.

Our thermomechanically rolled fine-grained steels are characterized by a high degree of toughness and excellent weldability. The low degree of cold cracking and high degree of toughness in the welding seam lead to a high degree of safety in welded structures.

Utilization of the higher yield strength in the high-strength fine-grained steels (alform plate 420 M, 460M, 500 M und 550 M), as opposed to the conventional S355, results in thinner cross sections that lead to cost savings through light-weight components and thus to less expensive transportation, assembly and foundations. Savings are also achieved in component manufacturing, particularly in welding.

High-strength plates

High-strength plates made of fine-grained steel have a minimum yield strength of 620 and 700 MPa, and ultra-high-strength special grades achieve yield strengths of up to 1100 MPa.

Higher stresses

Machines and buildings are becoming ever larger. When you double the values of length, width and height of a component, the weight grows by a factor of 8, while the supporting cross-sectional area only grows by a factor of 4. This doubles the stress, which is calculated with the weight divided by the cross-sectional area. High-strength steels are capable of supporting these higher stresses and simultaneously lead to decreased weight of the component.

Specific advantages

The low weight of high-strength and ultra-high-strength heavy plates saves costs: The pre-material expenses, transport charges, and the assembly and foundation costs drop drastically. Add to that the costs saved during further processing of the material. Thanks to the excellent welding properties, work can proceed quickly and efficiently. On top of this, much less filler metal is required, and the weld seam test is simplified.

Our portfolio

We deliver high-strength heavy plates as fine-grained steels with a minimum yield strength of 620 and 700 MPa and ultra-high-strength heavy plates with a minimum yield strength of 900, 960 and 1100 MPa as special voestalpine grades.

Raffinerie

Pressure vessel plates

Our pressure-vessel steels are suitable for very high or very low temperatures and are characterized by special strength and wall thickness. We also supply them in sour-gas-resistant design upon request.

Optimized workability

Roll-bonded shell plates, heads and cones in plain-carbon steel from a single source means optimum processing for our customers. The base materials are ideally matched during production. The large range of steel grades cover a wide spectrum of application possibilities.

Boiler construction and apparatus engineering

Pressure-vessel steels made by voestalpine Grobblech GmbH are found in the equipment and boilers in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Creep-resistant pressure-vessel steels withstand even the highest temperatures in these areas of application. They are especially suited to use in hot-application pressure vessels

High-strength alloys

We supply high-strength CrMo- und CrMoV steels for the reduction of wall thicknesses in thick-walled pressure vessels. Our customers use the high-strength P460 NL2 mod grade for plates and heads in LPG tank trucks. Cryogenic 9%nickel steels with toughness down to minus 196 °C are used in the construction of storage tanks for liquefied natural (LNG) gas. We also supply heat-treatable fitting steels (WPHY) in as-rolled condition.

Greater thickness and sour-gas-resistant

We provide heavy shell plates in selected steel grades, in thicknesses up to 200 mm and higher unit weights up to 24 tons based on ingot-cast pre-material. We also manufacture pressure vessel steels in sour-gas-resistant design for our customers.

From a single source

We supply from a single source shell plates, heads and cones made of both plain carbon steel and roll-clad design. This results in the following advantages for our customers:

  • Manufacturing and processing benefits, primarily in the field of welding, through use of the same steel for shell plates and heads
  • Technical consultation and coordination through quality assurance and research
  • Simultaneous manufacturing and delivery of shell plates and heads
  • Lower customer costs

Wear-resistant plates

Our durostat® and altrix® are attractive special grades for applications that require a high level of wear resistance.

Parts used in abrasive environments wear out quickly. In order to lengthen the service life of such components, we have developed two special steel grades whose service life is significantly longer than that of conventional steels. Our online-hardened durostat® carbon steels are especially wear-resistant and demonstrate the best processing properties. Our highly wear-resistant altrix® steels include multi-layer plates for an even longer service life.
