Castings for energy applications (< 10 tons)

We are a renowned supplier to the energy sector and comply with applicable international norms. The used materials are creep-resistant and cryogenic special steels with special properties. Castings in nickel-based alloys complete the portfolio. Finish-machined parts and component manufacturing allow supply of ready-to-install castings.

The maximum weight of castings for the energy industry is roughly 10 tons. Because the parts find their applications worldwide, they are manufactured and certified in compliance with both EN and ASTM norms and standards.

Gas-driven turbines

Based on our many years of experience and our high-quality metallurgical equipment, we are a reliable partner for all renowned turbine manufacturers. We manufacture castings for Francis, Kaplan and Pelton water turbines, including hubs, collars, Pelton wheel buckets, guide blades and adjusting cranks

Oil and gas

voestalpine Giesserei Traisen GmbH is specialized in the application of cryogenic materials. We have been supplying the international oil-field equipment industry for decades with ready-to-install and pre-assembled components. Examples of these products are as follows: compressor housings, compressors, blowout preventers, valves, bearing housings, expander housings.

Nickel-based materials

voestalpine Giesserei Traisen GmbH was heavily involved in the development of this product group for foundries. Nickel-based materials are characterized by high load-carrying capacity at high temperatures and pressures. Areas of application include, for example, steam-driven power plants that operate at 700 °C. Valves and admission ports are examples of successful nickel-based products.

These products are supplied as steel and nodular iron castings that meet customer requirements with respect to a variety of different strengths and levels of ductility. We manufacture castings made of manganese steel, stainless and acid-resistant materials (duplex steels) for special applications. Products are available upon request in ready-to-install condition.

Steel and nodular iron castings

Our manufacturing capacity includes an ingot mold facility that produces series with unit weights ranging between 50 and 400 kg with high economic efficiency. Larger and heavier parts for the machine-building industry are hand-formed. The maximum unit weight is around 10 tons for steel castings and 12 tons for nodular iron castings. Nodular iron castings comply with the EN-GJS 400 15 standard.

Mechanical engineering

We use various different materials in steel castings, from non-alloyed standard grades to heat-treatable and fine-grained steels to high-alloy and high-strength special steels with specified properties. Our casting applications are found in the fields of special transport, earth-moving equipment, mining and special machinery.

Switch manufacturing

voestalpine Giesserei Traisen GmbH delivers steel frogs made of manganese steel for high-speed railway systems. We are an esteemed and competent partner, particularly in the development of prototypes.

Stainless and acid-resistant steels

The metallurgical equipment at voestalpine Giesserei Traisen GmbH allows us to produce a broad range of materials. For example, standard-to-basic-alloy castings that are fully processed and ready to install are supplied to the food, paper and chemical industries.

Shipbuilding steel plates

Shipbuilding steel plates

Our shipbuilding steels in normal and high-strength grades are used in offshore applications, platform superstructures and for special ships in the oil and gas industry.

Areas of application

Steel shipbuilding plates are used in the cabin structures of cruise ships. The especially thin but wide plates are used for such applications to offer the best processing properties such as flatness and weldability. In contrast, high-strength, thermomechanically rolled shipbuilding plates are used in offshore applications. They are used for platform superstructures or for special ships in the oil and gas industry.

Offshore plates

Whether in the Gulf of Mexico, in the North Sea or the Arctic, our thermomechanically rolled structural steels for the offshore industry are in use worldwide.

Applications under the harshest conditions

We deliver high-quality offshore structural steels and thermomechanically rolled shipbuilding plates for drilling platforms, oil platforms and jack-up rigs. These steels are also used in foundations for offshore wind parks and floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs). In addition, we are in a position to produce chords for the feet of jack-up rigs. We supply prequalified material with plate thicknesses of up to 101.6 mm and CTOD values down to -40 °C for applications in arctic regions (arctic steel). Our thermomechanically rolled offshore plates are characterized by a high degree of toughness and excellent weldability. The low degree of cold cracking and high degree of toughness in the welding seam make it possible for us to guarantee the highest safety standards in welded structures.

Our offshore structural steels are qualified before they are put into use: Our stringent testing procedures are implemented under operating conditions to inspect strength, toughness, and (most importantly) weldability. Tests are performed under the auspices of Lloyd's register. We supply our offshore plates in thicknesses up to 101.6 mm in steel grades up to S460G2+M, prequalified according to EN10225. We supply our offshore plates for arctic applications in steel grades up to API 2W-60 with guaranteed CTOD values down to -40°C, prequalified according to API RP2Z.


Thermomechanically rolled fine-grained structural steel plates

alform®-steels are thermomechanically rolled steels with excellent weldability, toughness and cold-forming behavior.

We supply thermomechanically rolled heavy plates made of fine-grained steels with minimum yield strengths ranging from 355 to 550 MPa with exceptional toughness and the best welding and forming properties.

As a special high-quality voestalpine grade, alform® steels are found in structural steel work, bridges, pressure pipes and in vehicle and crane manufacturing.

Our thermomechanically rolled fine-grained steels are characterized by a high degree of toughness and excellent weldability. The low degree of cold cracking and high degree of toughness in the welding seam lead to a high degree of safety in welded structures.

Utilization of the higher yield strength in the high-strength fine-grained steels (alform plate 420 M, 460M, 500 M und 550 M), as opposed to the conventional S355, results in thinner cross sections that lead to cost savings through light-weight components and thus to less expensive transportation, assembly and foundations. Savings are also achieved in component manufacturing, particularly in welding.

High-strength plates

High-strength plates made of fine-grained steel have a minimum yield strength of 620 and 700 MPa, and ultra-high-strength special grades achieve yield strengths of up to 1100 MPa.

Higher stresses

Machines and buildings are becoming ever larger. When you double the values of length, width and height of a component, the weight grows by a factor of 8, while the supporting cross-sectional area only grows by a factor of 4. This doubles the stress, which is calculated with the weight divided by the cross-sectional area. High-strength steels are capable of supporting these higher stresses and simultaneously lead to decreased weight of the component.

Specific advantages

The low weight of high-strength and ultra-high-strength heavy plates saves costs: The pre-material expenses, transport charges, and the assembly and foundation costs drop drastically. Add to that the costs saved during further processing of the material. Thanks to the excellent welding properties, work can proceed quickly and efficiently. On top of this, much less filler metal is required, and the weld seam test is simplified.

High-strength heavy plates are found in offshore platform applications. We use a special tool in the head press shop to hot-form parts used in offshore platforms.

Support and anchoring system

Offshore platforms are supported by adjustable feet. During ocean transport, the feet are retracted and point upwards. At the designated location, the stands are extended until they reach the sea floor. Chords made by voestalpine Grobblech strengthen the gear racks of the feet and allow safe operation in rough conditions.

Complex manufacturing process

We developed our manufacturing technology for chords as hot-formed parts in our in-house press shop. The pre-material is heavy plate of high-strength fine-grained structural steel from our own rolling mill. Strips are cut from this plate and formed into chords with a special tool on a hydraulic press with a maximum pressing force of 3,500 tons. The tool function is based on finite-element calculations and guarantees a high degree of accuracy to shape. After being hot-formed, the chords are water-quenched and straightened. The edges are flame-cut and milled on both the side and end faces.
