There are around 2,589 level crossings of which 1598 are protected in the Netherlands. Every day they are used by thousands of people to cross one of the busiest rail networks in Europe.
The protection arrangements at level crossings depend on its location, for example proximity to road junctions, how much it is used, to minimize risks of collisions and the type of railway traffic.
