Bohler K700 Manganese Steel

The Ultimate Work Hardening Steel (11-14% MN / 1% C)

Bohler K700  Manganese is a “Work Hardening” steel commonly referred to as “AUSTENITIC 11-14% Manganese”. Bohler K700  is produced to the original “Hadfield Specification” which guarantees optimum wear and work hardening properties. It is “non magnetic” steel quality anf also refined to Bohler final specification  to allow the material to adapt easily to the fabrication and welding expectations  for the end users  .Always guaranteeing a high quality product in sheets and Bars.

Manganese Advantage is that it  WORK HARDEs during its life of operating conditions  refers to the fact that the steel becomes harder and harder the more it is impacted or compressed.

 

The Bohler K700 grade has an original hardness of approximately 220 BRINELL. With continued impact and /or compression it will surface harden to ~600 BRINELL.

It should be noted that only the outer skin surface hardens. The under layer remains highly ductile and tough. As the surface wears, it continually renews itself becoming harder and harder.

Manganese steel is an austenitic steel which means it is non-magnetic. This property makes it useful in many applications such as –applications listed below  –

Bohler K700 a 12-14% Manganese and 1.2 -1.4% Carbon alloy. The 10:1 ratio of manganese to carbon content following rapid quenching in water after solution heat treatment at 1000 to 1100 oC, fully retains its austenitic structure at room temperature. The unique process of cross rolling produces a supreme uniformity in terms of mechanical – technological and physical properties. This special wear resisting hard manganese steel features high toughness and excellent weldability which acquires its working hardness (surface up to 600 BHN) by strain hardening, thus being particularly suited  for applications involving wear by impact or pressure.

Electro Slag Remelted In Electro Slag Remelting the ingot is built up in a water cooled mould by melting a consumable electrode immersed in a superheated process slag. An electrical current flowing through the liquid slag, which provides the electrical resistance, generates the heat. As the slag temperature rises above the liquids temperature of the steel, the tip of the electrode melts. The reaction between slag and steel droplets results in a significant reduction in sulphur and non-metallic inclusions. The directional solidification of the ingot from bottom to top results in an ingot with a high homogeneity and freedom from macro – segregations. This gives uniform mechanical properties in the longitudinal and transverse directions after hot working. By utilizing homogenisation annealing of ingots, a high ingot break down and special heat treatment methods for structure refinement and strategy is fulfilled in optimising steel properties for an extended tool life.

Powder Metallurgy Grades

 

Process for PM tool steel
High Alloy Steels will gain improved properties by increasing the solidification rate. This gives a fine microstructure and small, well-distributed carbides in the matrix.

During Powder Metallurgy (PM), the melt stream is atomised by nitrogen gas into small droplets with an average size of 50-100 µm. The powder is filled into capsules directly in order to avoid contamination. With hot isostatic pressing (HIP), the powder is consolidated to 100% density.

By using a special refining sequence, the cleanliness of the molten steel is improved prior to atomisation. This results in improved mechanical properties and an extremely low non-metallic inclusion level (Super Clean™).

The HIP’ed PM capsules are hot forged and rolled to smaller bar sizes followed by heat treatment and machining.

PM steels are used in very demanding applications within cold work, plastic and cutting tools.
