voestalpine Grobblech has added hot-formed chords for the energy industry, a high-end product, to its portfolio. The material and quality requirements are extremely high.
Offshore platforms in shallow waters are flexible giants. Standing on three to four legs and solidly anchored to the ocean floor, the platforms have to be able to be elevated up and down to accommodate sea swells and the water depth. Gear racks are needed to move the platform. These racks are stabilized using two half shells known as hot-formed chords.
Gear racks are used for installation ships for offshore wind parks, as well as for oil and gas production in shallow waters. Chords used here have to be high strength, tough and crack resistant even at low temperatures. The continuing energy boom has generated an increase in demand. Chords have been in the product range since 2009, and 3000 have been sold since then.
