The aim of the European Steel Technology Platform, founded in 2003 as one of Europe’s first technology platforms, is to strengthen the European steel industry over the long term.

It also strives to ensure the industry’s continuing leadership over the coming years and initiate innovations to sustain the industry’s competitiveness and protect jobs.

“This is a fascinating role in times such as these, because it consists of actively and constructively shaping the path to carbon neutral steel production in line with the climate and energy goals of Europe’s Green Deal,” says Franz Androsch, delighted at his election as President.

All major European steel manufacturers are members of ESTEP, together with EUROFER—the European Steel Association, and scientific research institutions and plant manufacturers active in the steel sector. Since 2018, ESTEP has been run as a non-profit organization, and is open to all stakeholders in the steel industry which are also eligible for funding in Europe.

Franz Androsch President for 3 years with immediate effect

A total of 7 focus groups implement ESTEP’s strategic research agenda. The ESTEP Management Board consists of four members whose President is elected for a period of three years. The candidate is put forward by a steel manufacturing company. Franz Androsch, Head of R&D and Innovation at voestalpine, follows Carl De Maré of ArcelorMittal.

Steel Division represented in almost all focus groups

Two focus groups, namely Low Carbon & Energy Efficiency, and Circular Economy, are addressing technologies for safe, clean, and efficient steel production. Three groups deal with steel use, addressing solutions for transport & mobility, as well as for the construction and energy industries. The People focus group considers recruitment measures and continuing professional development, while Smart Factory concentrates on integrated, intelligent production concepts. As a result, the Steel Division of the voestalpine Group is represented in almost all focus groups.
