App for converting units of measurement

Sophisticated strip steel products from voestalpine Precision Strip are in demand around the world—the Group has sales companies in Austria, Sweden, Spain, China, Mexico, and the USA. “Our colleagues in sales are active globally, across continents and cultures,” says Head of Marketing Axel Michels who initiated the new app. The various markets not only have different cultures, but the units of measurement in which steel strip is calculated and quoted are also different. For example, in Europe calculations are made in euros per kilo, while US dollars per pound is the norm in the USA.

Converting in the office was, and is, no problem, but it was a challenge when travelling by plane, offline, or at a customer’s premises—with the stress on “was”. The new app is a calculator which can be used to determine the weight and dimensions of coils or stacks of strip steel, and to calculate the price in seven international currencies and various units of measurement. The app is available in the Android and Apple stores, and as an HTML version from the voestalpine Precision Strip website, and has been used intensively over the past six months.
