Aceros Bohler Uddeholm will officially open its third Mexican site, in Puebla, in mid-January.
Aceros Bohler Uddeholm is a sales subsidiary in the Special Steel Division, and its customers are primarily in the automotive industry. This sector is currently experiencing a real boom in Mexico. Quietly, and almost unnoticed, in 2014, the output of Mexico’s automotive industry overtook that of Brazil. According to the responsible Chamber of Commerce, 1.86 million vehicles were produced during the first seven months of the year— 7.5% more than in the same period of the previous year. In contrast, only 1.7 million vehicles rolled off Brazil’s production lines during the same period. This is a whole 17% lower than during the same period in 2013. It is estimated that 3.4 million cars and vans were manufactured by the end of 2014. This is more than ever before in a single year. The automotive sector currently accounts for 17.6% of the country’s manufacturing industry.
Strategically favorable location
After Mexico City and Monterrey, Aceros Bohler Uddeholm will open its third Mexican site in the city of Puebla, which has a population of 1.5 million. Strategically, the new 980-m² Aceros Bohler Uddeholm warehouse is very favorably located. The new site is also equipped with a 10-ton crane, saws for dimensions of up to 1,250 mm, and 100 m² of office space.
The first tool steel was cut on the saws and delivered to customers in November 2014. The company plans to supply 85% of the materials needed by customers in Puebla directly from the warehouse within four months. Its customers are primarily in the automotive industry. However, there is increasing demand for products for the plastic molding sector, as well as cold and hot work tool steels for the consumer goods and construction segments.
Capacity for growth
The strategy for the new site sounds promising: close to the customers, carefully selected materials, quick delivery times, and good service.
In a first step, the Puebla site will be equipped with grinding machines; it is already clear that, as in other locations in Mexico, the demand for value added services in Puebla will increase.
