voestalpine and Projekt Spielberg are cooperating to mark the return of the Austrian Grand Prix to the Formula 1 calendar. A new and modern construction will be erected right alongside the start/finishing straight at the Red Bull Ring: the voestalpine wing.

The design of the voestalpine wing

The voestalpine wing is 90 meters long and was designed to mirror the spoiler on a racing car. Just like a spoiler, the building will also be subjected to enormous forces, such as wind loads of up to 56 tons. It is only thanks to the construction material steel that this architectural shape is possible. Almost 900 tons of steel were used in the construction.

The function of the voestalpine wing

Thanks to its unique shape, the voestalpine wing will certainly become the landmark of the Red Bull Ring. As well as being an architectural statement, the voestalpine wing also has other functions:

  • Welcome Center: situated directly alongside the start/finishing line, the voestalpine wing will be the Welcome Center for all visitors – the gate to the Red Bull Ring.
  • Media center: during Formula 1 and other motorsport events the building will serve as the media center for 500 press representatives whose reports will be broadcast to 186 countries worldwide.
  • Event center: the building will also be used throughout the year for events such as product presentations, international conferences and voestalpine staff events.

Co-operation between voestalpine and Projekt Spielberg

This co-operation clearly demonstrates voestalpine’s commitment to Styria and highlights its competence in the automotive sector. The voestalpine Group has approximately 8,000 employees at 13 sites in Styria, making a significant contribution to value creation, infrastructure and securing jobs in the region.

Specialization in the automotive sector also makes voestalpine an ideal partner.  44 percent of Group revenue is currently generated in the expanding mobility market; in the automotive, commercial vehicle, railway infrastructure and aviation sectors. voestalpine supplies high quality products to the automotive industry which are used for both serial production vehicles as well as international motor racing.

This demonstrates how our co-operation with Projekt Spielberg touches on several areas of interest. As involvement in the voestalpine wing will generate significant international resonance, it offers a good opportunity for voestalpine to present its competencies in this field.
