Description and megatrends

Steadily increasing deadline constraints and the reduction of overall project costs in onshore pipelines have led the segment more towards semi-and fully automated welding processes with solid-, flux- and metal- cored wires in order to increase productivity compared to manual arc welding. voestalpine Böhler Welding has monitored this trend over the last years and has developed highly effective technologies/consumables in collaboration with key equipment suppliers to meet the highest technical requirements in diversified climatic zones such as in the desert or the arctic. In order to reduce wall thicknesses and to increase operational pressures, higher tensile strength pipes produced from thermo mechanically (TM) treated steel plates, e.g. X80, are currently being used in onshore pipeline projects.

Customers and stakeholders

Customers and stakeholders are mainly governments, national or international oil and gas companies, water authorities, mining companies for slurry pipelines, engineering procurement construction (EPC) contractors and sub-contractors who are commissioned to safely and cost effectively construct pipelines using welding consumables and processes.

Applications, process solutions and products

voestalpine Böhler Welding offers a full range of consumables for welding of low & high strength, stainless, duplex & super duplex and CRA pipes meeting highest project requirements in gathering-, transportation- and distribution pipeline projects. This includes solid-, flux- metal- and self-shielded flux-cored wires for semi- and fully mechanized welding processes, submerged wire and flux combinations for double joining as well as gas tungsten arc wires and rod offering outstanding welding performance and mechanical properties. State of the art manual arc welding electrodes are manufactured either in form of cellulosic coating systems or basic, low hydrogen with vertical up or vertical down operability. The most common base metals are

  • Low and high strength pipe steels from API 5L grade A – X100 (X120)
  • Austenitic, e.g. 316L
  • Duplex grade, e.g. UNS S31803/S32205
  • Super duplex, e.g. UNS S32760
  • CRA, e.g. Alloy 625

Service and markets

Technical expertise and application support such as the welding of high tensile grades X80/X100 (X120), SS, DSS & SDSS and CRA are located in our main manufacturing facilities, who work closely in partnership with colleagues and customers worldwide. Commercial and technical support will be provided from the early stage of specification preparation until final commissioning including support during WPS execution, welder training, project site visits resp. analysing of project performance.
