Welding Components for the Urea Industry

Urea or carbamide, an organic compound derived from ammonia, is the most widely used fertilizer in the world. The high-pressure sector of a urea production plant consists of the reactor, the stripper and the condenser, which have the following main functions:

  • The urea synthesis takes place in the reactor
  • The stripper extracts vapors of unreacted CO2 and ammonia
  • The condenser condenses these vapors to ammonia carbamate, which is finally returned to the reactor.

The pressure level can be around 150 bar, and temperature between 180°C to 210°C, depending on the equipment and the process selected.

The pressure retaining materials are generally low alloyed Mn-Mo-Ni steel. The shells and tube sheets are then lined or overlay welded at the points where the surfaces come in contact with the process fluid. Piping can be either bi-metallic, lined or made entirely of stainless steel urea grades (e.g. 316L UG and 310MoL).

When welding stainless steel urea grades, special care must be taken to avoid undesirable intermetallic phase precipitations by closely controlling the welding parameters and the interpass temperature. For this reason, the most commonly used welding processes for joining are GTAW and SMAW.
