Responsibility to the environment

voestalpine Stahl Donawitz plays an active role in the responsibility towards the environment and society. The company has been managing the further development of environmental activities and the improvement of the environmental situation at the plant site since 1999 with an environmental management system.

These activities go far beyond the fulfilment of minimum legal requirements. The motto is to actively and preventively meet future requirements.

In addition to the control and monitoring of environmental activities and manufacturing processes, environmental targets are set annually. Improvement projects and environmental targets in the areas of water supply, production residues as well as energy and material consumption have been implemented.

Significant progress has been made in the recent past, for example, through:

  • Construction of additional state-of-the-art air purification systems at the sintering plant, the two blast furnaces and the steelworks
  • Construction of a cooling water supply system from the Mur. Cooling water is fed into circuits and used several times.
  • Reprocessing and internal recycling of production residues.

Our employees are firmly involved in these activities and are trained and supported in their activities with regard to environmental responsibility.

Today, the Donawitz steel site is one of the cleanest steel mills in Europe.

Annual evaluation of the environmental management system

The environmental management system is evaluated annually by the management and reviewed by internal departments and an external certification organization. It is certified according to the requirements of EMAS and ISO 14001.
