Lime as a natural raw material has been mined in Steyrling in Upper Austria for many generations and is transported by rail to the primary consumers in the steelmaking industry. Smaller amounts are shipped by truck to other customers in the region. Burnt lime carefully produced by burning natural gas serves as a neutralizer for acid rain, as a fertilizer in the agricultural industry, in waste-water treatment plants or as a pH determinant in the chemical industry.
