altrix®

Strong combination

altrix® multilayer roll-bonded clad plates manufactured by means of the in-house-developed cladding-by-rolling method as two-ply or three-ply plates. The base material features high degrees of toughness and good weldability. The coating material features highest strength and wear resistance in hardened condition.

Areas of application

Multi-layer altrix® plates are typically used in applications such as suction dredger tubes, ridge forming plates, wear plates on roll housings and in mold engineering, paddles in log washers, slides, chutes and transfer plates in the sand, gravel and concrete industry.

Materials

The standard base material of altrix® multilayer plates is steel grade S235 pursuant to EN 10025-2. The coating material used is 2842 (altrix 90). In hardened condition, a hardness of up to 66 HRC can be achieved. altrix® plates are delivered in as-rolled condition.

Dimensions

  • Sheet thickness: 7–80 mm
  • Maximum sheet width 3,800 mm
  • Maximum plate length 12,000 mm
  • Ordered weight: at least 10 tons per line item
  • Maximum unit weight 6.3 tons per single plate

The correct coating thickness distribution must be determined while taking into account the desired wear resistance and resistance to failure. A thickness ratio of 50/50 between the cladding and the base material is typical for two-layer plates, and a ratio of 33/34/33 (hard/tough/hard) for three-layer plates.

Advantages of altrix®

  • Longer service life due to
  • high hardness and resistance to failure of the coated metal
  •  Smooth surface: good flow behavior, little zinc build-up
  •  Best weldability in as-delivered and hardened condition
  •  Simple fastening procedures

Mild, unalloyed steels for cold forming

These steels are generally delivered in accordance with EN 10111. They are used in applications in which formability is more important than strength.

Structural steels

These steels are included in EN 10025. One of their fields of application is in machinery. The steels are characterized by minimum yield strength, a margin for tensile strength and minimum fracture elongation. They are used for light drawing stress, forming and bending.

alform® steels

alform® is a brand name in the voestalpine Steel Division and stands for hot-rolled fine-grained steel with best cold-forming properties and excellent weldability. alform® steels are available in various grades and strength classes. Whether thermomechanically or normalized rolled, as hot-rolled strip or heavy plate, in coils, slit strip or cut sheets, alform® is an indispensable material in mechanical engineering, automotive design and in the processing Industry.

durostat® steels

durostat® grades are wear-resistant steels that feature high hardness achieved through accelerated cooling directly from the rolling heat. They are characterized by a high degree of wear resistance and are especially suited to applications with high mechanical stress and high levels of abrasion.

Case-hardening and heat-treatable steels

Case-hardening and heat-treatable steels pursuant to DIN EN ISO 683-1 and EN 10084 as well as the voestalpine standard are implemented in direct-processing applications or are used for cold re-rolling. These steels generally undergo heat treatment in order to achieve the desired processing and component properties. They are used in applications that must strike an optimum balance between hardness and toughness.

Pole sheets

Pole sheets are thermomechanically rolled steels with guaranteed magnetic properties. Standard grades are pursuant to Euronorm EN 10265:1995 (corresponding to IEC 404-8-5). Ultra-high-strength special voestalpine grades are also supplied.

Hot-rolled enamelable steels

The narrowest tolerances, high material quality and highly specialized application expertise guarantee products that meet every requirement. Combinations of thick hot-rolled steels and thin cold-rolled steels, for example, are often used in industrial silo designs.

Hot-rolled strip next level

We go one step further with hot-rolled Q for the tube and section industry. Q for even more quality than you would expect as a customer. Q for even more hot-rolled strip grades, especially in the tube and section industry. Characteristics that can all be of great importance to customers or just individually. Hot-rolled Q for the tube and section industry is a package full of quality and efficiency improvements for production as well as for the end product.

Exploring new frontiers

What would our daily life be like without machines? Very different, that's for sure. The invention of effective new tools has always been a way of overcoming our limitations, and we are still creating innovative materials to push the limits even further. At voestalpine, we have proven this again and again with new and optimized products. Expertise from a wide range of highly innovative industries is bundled and engineered into materials and solutions for machinery, equipment and vehicles. The solutions are not only convincing in the lab, and they open new possibilities by increasing efficiency in design, production and use.

Consistently reduced weight

When high strength is no longer sufficient. With alform®, voestalpine offers an ultra-high-strength material to be used in combination with the alform® welding system to produce ultra-high-strength weld joints. A reduction in material thickness of more than 70% without compromising any performance results in a weight savings that goes hand in hand with substantially increased efficiency. Best cutability, best forming behavior and excellent toughness round off this power package.

Safely increased efficiency

The demands on the materials used in modern engineering are enormous. Perfect workability during the production process must not be a contradiction to maximum wear resistance and economy of use. With durostat®, voestalpine has succeeded in more than just meeting these requirements. One of the safest, most robust and efficient materials, durostat® boasts of highest durability in abrasive applications, enormous weight savings when compared to conventional structural steels, hardness second to none thanks to a specially developed direct hardening process, best cold formability thanks to fine-grained microstructure and high degree of purity, and best weldability thanks to the optimized carbon equivalent.

The skipster is the true winner in lightness and stability.

alform® makes many things lighter. The thermomechanically rolled (TM) material combines lightness with stability like no other, making it the perfect candidate for countless applications where high load capacity and low weight are essential. This applies to high-tech and complex machinery as well as comparatively simple containers.

TransANT railway freight cars made of high-strength alform® steel

Rail Cargo Group (RCG) was looking for a lightweight design that would meet the logistics requirements of the 21st century. The subsidiary of ÖBB has many years of valuable experience in freight transports and is part of a very strong international network. Coupled with the material expertise of voestalpine, a future-oriented design has now been developed with TransANT. This could be a revolution in railway freight car design.
