We are the only provider worldwide of shell plates, heads and cones from a single source in carbon steel and as clad products.

Successful throughout the world

Our dished heads are found in applications such as heat exchangers, separators, columns, compressors, storage containers and tank cars. Our customers are found in the petrochemistry, oil and gas, paper and pulp, energy and railcar manufacturing industries. We are the world's only single-source supplier to deliver shell plates, heads and cones made of carbon steel in clad design.

Our materials

We use structural steels, fine-grained structural steels and pressure-vessel steels for carbon-steel heads and pressed parts.

We manufacture clad heads and pressed parts from all conventional carbon steels. We supply stainless and heat-resistant steel grades and non-ferrous metals and alloys as cladding materials for optimum corrosion resistance.

Headmolds and dimensions

We manufacture custom-made heads as a single part or welded from multiple parts. Multi-part cones are available in head gauges of up to 160 mm and diameters of up to 10,000 mm.

Areas of application

Steel shipbuilding plates are used in the cabin structures of cruise ships. The especially thin but wide plates are used for such applications to offer the best processing properties such as flatness and weldability. In contrast, high-strength, thermomechanically rolled shipbuilding plates are used in offshore applications. They are used for platform superstructures or for special ships in the oil and gas industry.

Whether in the Gulf of Mexico, in the North Sea or the Arctic, our thermomechanically rolled structural steels for the offshore industry are in use worldwide.

Applications under the harshest conditions

We deliver high-quality offshore structural steels and thermomechanically rolled shipbuilding plates for drilling platforms, oil platforms and jack-up rigs. These steels are also used in foundations for offshore wind parks and floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs). In addition, we are in a position to produce chords for the feet of jack-up rigs. We supply prequalified material with plate thicknesses of up to 101.6 mm and CTOD values down to -40 °C for applications in arctic regions (arctic steel). Our thermomechanically rolled offshore plates are characterized by a high degree of toughness and excellent weldability. The low degree of cold cracking and high degree of toughness in the welding seam make it possible for us to guarantee the highest safety standards in welded structures.

Prequalified 

Our offshore structural steels are qualified before they are put into use: Our stringent testing procedures are implemented under operating conditions to inspect strength, toughness, and (most importantly) weldability. Tests are performed under the auspices of Lloyd's register. We supply our offshore plates in thicknesses up to 101.6 mm in steel grades up to S460G2+M, prequalified according to EN10225. We supply our offshore plates for arctic applications in steel grades up to API 2W-60 with guaranteed CTOD values down to -40°C, prequalified according to API RP2Z.

Clad linepipe plates

We are the world's largest producer of roll-bonded clad linepipe plates. The highest sour-gas requirements are met by our roll-bonded clad linepipe plates with corrosion-resistant cladding.

Sour-gas-resistant linepipe plates

The sour gases occurring in the linepipes used for the transport of oil and gas are highly corrosive. Only the highest-quality materials are capable of withstanding this aggressive medium. As a leading provider of sour-gas-resistant linepipe plates worldwide, we supply linepipes with corrosion-resistant cladding for specific applications.

Protective cladding material

The base material is decisive in the production of linepipes. Our roll-bonded clad plates are extremely strong, tough and resistant to corrosion as a result of their cladding material. Materials such as our X65 product with nickel-based alloy 625 provide the optimum physical properties. Our pipe partners process these materials into metallurgically bonded clad linepipes.

Elements of the highest quality

The metallurgical bonding of the clad linepipes withstands the highest mechanical stress and dynamic loads, making the pipes especially suited to deep-sea applications under highly corrosive conditions.

Thermomechanically rolled fine-grained structural steel plates

alform®-steels are thermomechanically rolled steels with excellent weldability, toughness and cold-forming behavior.

We supply thermomechanically rolled heavy plates made of fine-grained steels with minimum yield strengths ranging from 355 to 550 MPa with exceptional toughness and the best welding and forming properties.

As a special high-quality voestalpine grade, alform® steels are found in structural steel work, bridges, pressure pipes and in vehicle and crane manufacturing.

Our thermomechanically rolled fine-grained steels are characterized by a high degree of toughness and excellent weldability. The low degree of cold cracking and high degree of toughness in the welding seam lead to a high degree of safety in welded structures.

Utilization of the higher yield strength in the high-strength fine-grained steels (alform plate 420 M, 460M, 500 M und 550 M), as opposed to the conventional S355, results in thinner cross sections that lead to cost savings through light-weight components and thus to less expensive transportation, assembly and foundations. Savings are also achieved in component manufacturing, particularly in welding.

High-strength plates

High-strength plates made of fine-grained steel have a minimum yield strength of 620 and 700 MPa, and ultra-high-strength special grades achieve yield strengths of up to 1100 MPa.

Higher stresses

Machines and buildings are becoming ever larger. When you double the values of length, width and height of a component, the weight grows by a factor of 8, while the supporting cross-sectional area only grows by a factor of 4. This doubles the stress, which is calculated with the weight divided by the cross-sectional area. High-strength steels are capable of supporting these higher stresses and simultaneously lead to decreased weight of the component.

Specific advantages

The low weight of high-strength and ultra-high-strength heavy plates saves costs: The pre-material expenses, transport charges, and the assembly and foundation costs drop drastically. Add to that the costs saved during further processing of the material. Thanks to the excellent welding properties, work can proceed quickly and efficiently. On top of this, much less filler metal is required, and the weld seam test is simplified.

LNG-Tanks

Nickel plates

We supply high-quality nickel plates in extra wide and thin dimensions for the storage and transport of LNG and LPG.

LNG

Natural gas is liquefied at the extremely low temperature of -164 °C, shrinking its volume by a factor of 600. This makes its storage and transport possible and economically efficient. At these very low temperatures, the utilization of special 9 % nickel steels is necessary in order to guarantee sufficient toughness and resistance to brittle cracking. We supply extra wide plates to this market segment, even with a thickness of 5 mm.

LPG

The LPG process is used to produce propane and process gases from natural gas. These gases are liquefied at room temperature at low pressure and are stored in special tanks made of 5 % nickel steels. We supply shell plates and vessel heads from a single source.

Highest quality for the highest degree of safety

The basis of our high-quality nickel plates are high-purity slabs from our own steelmaking plant. The very low carbon content guarantees perfect weldability. Further advantages are found in the product's excellent impact strength and the fracture-mechanical properties (CTOD). The entire plate surface undergoes ultrasonic testing. The residual magnetism is below 50 gauss.

Specialist for extreme conditions

Extremely low arctic temperatures, extreme pressures in the deep ocean, acid media: Even the most difficult conditions have no negative effect on our linepipe plates. Our plates are found in depths of up to 3,000 meters below the sea surface, either in the form of sour-gas-resistant linepipe plates or as land lines up to 48 inches (1,220 mm) in diameter. Our linepipe plates are thermomechanically rolled and accelerated-cooled. All grades available upon request as sour-gas-resistant at pH3 or pH5 according to NACE TM 0284 Solution A and B. All grades can be delivered with notched-bar impact and Battelle test (BDWTT) at temperatures below 0 °C. HIC tests for sour-gas applications upon request.
