Training/Apprenticeship
Many companies have modern plants. But in the end it is the human beings who determine if good products emerge from them. The thousands of specialist staff from our own training centres form the basis for our success. We currently have about 1,500 apprentices on our books, clear proof that we are committed to giving young people a proper professional training. We are also particularly keen on increasing the number of women in the technical trades.
A good training forms the basis for your future and for ours.
Your training period is worth more than 70,000 Euros to us. This money is a good investment, for example, as voestalpine apprentices are regularly celebrated as being among the best in the world in international competitions. In addition we don't need to worry about having well-qualified staff in the future nor about finding more female staff, in particular, because happily more and more girls are starting their technical training at voestalpine.
Training is more than just learning technical skills.
By "training", we do not just mean passing on technical knowledge. Just as important for us is personal and social development, the ability to work in a team, involvement with other cultures, perhaps from foreign visits, and also the promotion of good health and fitness. Language tours and excursions are just as much a part of the training programme as team-building exercises and outdoor training sessions. Since 2008 we have been running in Linz a new pilot project called "Lehre mit Matura" (or Apprenticeship with the School-leaving Examination), in what is Austria's largest and most up-to-date training centre.
If any apprentices should get into difficulty they have a network of mentors in place to help them.
For us professional training has an international dimension – it applies across the whole group. In countries, where there are no state-run training colleges, we set up in-house centres with a similar structure so that we can offer young people all over the world the best possible training. In Austria and Germany, for example, we use a tried-and-tested combination of college and practical experience, the so-called "dual system", and this idea has already been adopted at our locations in Holland, the USA and Great Britain.
