Open Hearth Process
The conversion of solid pig iron with the addition of iron or steel scrap to steel through exposure to burning gases in a reverberatory furnace. In the refining of the molten metal, the carbon is generally reduced considerably below the percentage ultimately required and the metal is thereafter recarburized. Usually additions of manganese and silicon are also made.
