gage Line
A theoretical line 5/8" below the top of a rail head.

gage (of track)
The distance between the gage lines, measured at right angles (standard North American gage is 56 1/2").

gage (track tool)
A device used to establish or measure the gage of a track.

Guard Rail
A rail or other structure laid parallel with the running rails of a track - used to hold wheels in correct alignment to prevent their flanges from striking the end of switch points of frog points.

Guard Rail Brace
A metal shape designed to fit the contour of the side of the guardrail and extend over the tie. Has provisions for fastening in order to restrain the moving or tilting of the guardrail away from the running rail.

Guard Rail Clamp
A device consisting of a yoke and fastenings designed to engage the running rail and guardrail and hold them in correct relations to each other.
