December 2006: Limited Edition Series Print
(Posted on: Dec 1, 2006 @ 2:02 pm)
Nortrak issues its 20th print of our Limited Edition Series, the work of prominent railroad artist, Larry Fisher. This year's print is that of a Roundhouse depicting after hours maintenance.
Even roundhouse tracks need upkeep and replacing from time to time. However that job is a bit more complicated in the crowded confines of a roundhouse than out on some lonely double-track line.
With the constant comings and goings of many locomotives, the rail crew must not keep the tracks tied up too long.
In this scene three tracks are taken out of service to replace a few rails on track 22. The swing-shift maintenance crew takes a short break only to allow a tired looking 0-6-0 switcher to clear the turntable and check in at stall 21 for a nights rest and recuperation. The aging steamer has just completed her daily switching duties.
The rails must be changed before the next morning dawns. So the Maintenance-of-Way crew has brought in a speeder crane to expedite the project. The small crane will remove the old rail and place the new one down to be spiked, saving a lot of man hours, as well as back pain. The crane can also be utilized to remove old ties if necessary.
A brightly colored FT diesel stands out like a beacon of light in this otherwise dark, drab, gritty 27-stall roundhouse.
