Company History
Nortrak started in October 1981 as Nortrak Railway Supply Ltd., an industrial supplier of railroad track components, both new and used. In November 1983, we began manufacturing trackwork in Richmond, BC, Canada. Voest-Alpine Eisenbahnsysteme of Austria, who had been in the trackwork manufacturing business for over 140 years, made a strategic decision in 1990 to enter the trackwork market in North America, formed a joint venture with Nortrak Ltd. and the company became known as VAE Nortrak Ltd.
A second plant in Birmingham, AL was completed in 1992, and the third operation broke ground in 1995 in Cheyenne, WY and opened June 4, 1997.
In January 2004, VAE Nortrak North America, Inc., acquired the assets of it's competitor, Meridian Rail Track Products Corp. with operations at Pueblo, CO, Newton, KS and Chicago Heights, IL and in November 2004, Nortrak acquired the assets of Rail Products and Fabrications including a trackwork plant and a manganese foundry in Seattle, WA.
Effective May 29, 2007, Nortrak completed the purchase of two buildings from the City of Cheyenne. Since January of 2000 Nortrak has leased one of the buildings from the City. The second building will facilitate the company’s expansion into the manufacture of pre-stress concrete switch ties for the railroad industry.
In 2008, the company will expand and update its facility in Newton, Kansas. A new 50 by 100 square foot building will be constructed.
Also, the existing building is being refurbished to accommodate more than $2.1 million of new equipment. On April 1st, VAE Nortrak North America Inc, announced that it acquired a majority ownership in DAMY Cambios de Vía, S.A. de C.V. DAMY is located in Guadalajara, Mexico and has been a manufacturer of specialty trackwork for more than 40 years. DAMY is the market leader in Mexico for trackwork products and is known for its product quality and commitment to customer service. Nortrak has been working together with DAMY very closely over recent years and the participation of Nortrak in DAMY is the final step of the excellent business relationship. The company will be renamed Nortrak-DAMY.
Nortrak is the industry leader in technology, and also the market leader in sales and production capacity.
Nortrak is a part of the VAE group, the world's largest trackwork manufacturer and Voest Alpine Railway Systems.
