Cold levelling

Flatness is an important quality criterion for heavy plates. Non uniform plastic deformation during hot rolling or uneven cooling cause internal stresses which can lead to unflatness of the plate. The most frequent faults are transverse ripples, as well as ripples in the center and at the edges. These phenomena are removed by cold levelling which brings the plates to the required flatness level.

The cold levelling machine is equipped with individually adjustable rolls and is operated with a computer model. The model takes into account the material properties and the plate dimensions, while the initial unevenness has to be evaluated and accounted for by the machine operator. Thus a one-step process results in flat plates with uniform internal stress conditions.
