Division Railway Systems in Detail

The division is divided into the following segments:

  • Rail technology:
With production sites in both Leoben/Donawitz (voestalpine Schienen GmbH) and Duisburg (TSTG Schienen Technik GmbH) voestalpine is the European market leader by some margin. We are also the only supplier of so-called ultra-long high-quality rails in unwelded lengths of 120m (also for specially head-hardened grades). Both rail production sites are equipped with the world’s best rail section programme.
  • Turnout technology:
With VAE GmbH, voestalpine also owns the world leader in turnouts and turnout systems. Alongside its base in Zeltweg, VAE owns more than 30 production sites worldwide. The VAE corporate group is a global technology leader (profiting from 1,500 current patents) supplying customers worldwide in high-speed, passenger, (heavy) goods and municipal (underground and tram) transport.
  • Logistics and services:
The German company, voestalpine Klöckner Bahntechnik GmbH, offers planning and general contractor services for railway systems. The Netherlands-based voestalpine Railpro B.V. specialises in railway infrastructure products and services.
  • Industrial partnerships:
    - Division Railway Systems has its own steel base in voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH & Co KG. This fully-integrated metallurgical facility includes a fine ore sinter plant, two blast furnaces and Europe’s most modern compact LD steelmaking plant. The plant's primary purpose is the production of high-quality prematerial, above all for Division Railway System’s rolling mills.
    - The Donawitz, Bruck/Mur and Finsterwalde works, which are brought together under Austrian Draht GmbH (rolled wire products), represent a broad wire production programme at the high quality end of the market. Its main customers are the automobile, construction and construction fastenings industries.
    - voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co KG produce seamless tubes in Kindberg. Company ownership is divided equally between voestalpine and the United States company, Grant Prideco. The company produces high-tech seamless tubes for the worldwide oil and gas transport industry, automotive applications and for boiler construction.
